St. Canice's Senior Hurling League

Dicksboro 0-10 Erin's Own 1-10

Our first round Senior Hurling League game against Erin's Own ended in disappointment for the 'Boro this afternoon with a three point defeat. The game was played in Freshford in far from ideal conditions, with a strong cold wind blowing which was made worse with the addition of rain halfway through the first half. The 'Boro got off the blocks with a Shane Maher point in less than three minutes but shortly afterwards a high ball landed in our six yard box which was blocked down only to land nicely for Gordan Byrne who pulled first time---goal. 'Comer followed this up with a point from Martin Boran before an Eddie O'Donoghue free on the seventh minute left the score standing at Dicksboro 0-2 Erin's Own 1-1. Between the twelveth and fifteenth we had a very good patch, scoring five points from play, three from Oisin Walsh and one each from Shane and Paul O'Flynn and we looked like we were in the ascendancy. Shortly after, Martin Gaffney received a very heavy blow to the head and had to be replaced and this seemed to take a bit out of the 'Boro momentum. We failed to score for the remainder of the half which was disappointing as we were playing with the strong wind. HT Dicksboro 0-7 Erin's Own 1-2.

Within five minutes of the start of the second half we had another setback as Eddie O'Donoghue had to be replaced by Mason Clifford due to injury. The loss of two key players was taking its toll and we found it difficult to get scores, only managing one from play from Cillian Starr in the entire second half and two more from placed balls. 'Comer, on the other hand added eight more to their halftime tally. FT Dicksboro 0-10 Erin's Own 1-10

Clara struck early in the second half with three unanswered points to bring the game back to level and it was nip and tuck all the way to the end, leading to a very exciting finish and second victory out of three games to the 'Boro lads. Duggan Steel Under 16 Roinn 'A' Hurling League

Dicksboro 5-15 Slieverue 5-7

Slieverue arrived in Palmerstown full of determination to take the scalp of a city team and they certainly gave it their all in what a number of spectators described as a humdinger. The 'Boro's ability to immedately respond to any Slievrue score was telling as it did not allow our opponents to get into their stride. We were a point up after seven minutes when Slieverue scored a goal but from the puck out we then scored a point. When Slieverue scored a second goal on the tenth minute, we again responded by scoring two goals within two minutes. We were now in front and that was the way it was going to stay for the remainder of the game. Within a six minute spell we scored 3-3 to put Slieverue firmly on the back foot. A late goal from Slieverue on the thirty third minute gave them a lifeline.

HT Dicksboro 3-7 Slieverue 3-1.

The second half was equally as exciting as the first with scores coming every couple of minutes for both teams and if you took your eye off of this game even for a moment you were bound to have missed some important action. Credit to Slieverue, they stuck at it and at one stage brought the game back to within three points but the 'Boro were in no humour to relinquish this one and a 1-5 to 1-0 return in the last ten minutes sealed the victory. FT Dicksboro 5-15 Slieverue 5-7.

Community Games

Huge congratulations goes to the U10 1/2 Dicksboro boys playing under the St Canice`s & St. Mary`s Community games banner as they emerged victorious as Kilkenny Co. Champions last Saturday in windswept & cold Johnstown. After a number of year`s absence the Dicksboro boys opened their account with a 1.04 to 0.00 win over the adjoining St. John`s Parish team. Next up were Aghaviller (Community Games National Champions 2011). Despite dominating the play for long periods the city parish just could`nt convert numerous scoring chances and were defeated on a 1.01 to 0.01 scoreline. Dramatically in the final group game St. Johns boys defeated Aghaviller leaving the Canice`s & Mary`s boy top of the group on a superior scoring average. Amid wild scenes of celebration the city boys overcame a gallant Urlingford-Johnstown-Galmoy in the final on a 3.04 to 1.01 scoreline to capture the Co. Kilkenny Community Games title - the boys now go on to represent Kilkenny in the Leinster series. Congrats to all the boys & mentors Des Walsh, Seamus Rowe & Seán Kennedy.

All County Junior Hurling League

Our second game in the All County Junior Hurling League took place today in Palmerstown against All Ireland Intermediate Champions, Mount Leinster Rangers. Despite our opponents status our Junior team were a match for them, but squandered scoring chances throughout the game proved costly. The period between the ninth and twenty first minutes of the second half was pivotal. At the start of this period, the ‘Boro trailed by 1-2 to 1-7 but a goal chance for the ‘Boro was driven into the side net, whilst Rangers had luck on their side as we conceded two soft goals, one from forty yards out as our keeper was unsighted and both of these goals coming within two minutes of each other. With a bit more of the rub of the green we could have won this game. FT Dicksboro 2-5 Mount Leinster Rangers 3-9.

Junior 'B' Hurling League

Dicksboro 0-11 Erin's Own 2-6

Erin's Own's ability to score goals in the first half was enough to keep their heads above water when it came to the final whistle in this Junior 'B' North Hurling League as they lead at halftime by 0-5 to 2-4. A 7pm start to the game at this time of year meant that the light would fade badly before the game was over, which was unfair and dangerous to both teams. Despite taking the first point of the second half, we could have conceded two early goals but for some very good goalkeeping from Sammy and Ger O'Donoghue. As it turned out the 'Boro lads kept at their task and continued to eat into 'Comer's lead, which provided for a close finish where we could have made a draw of the game but unfortunately time ran out for us. Our next game in this league is currently scheduled for Friday 20th April at 7pm in Clara.

Minor Roinn 'A' Hurling League

Dicksboro 5-17 St. Lachtains 3-11

Our Minor Roinn 'A' team put in a very good start to this, their second game in the hurling league, held in Palmerstown. Things were going well for us up to the ninth minute when we were leading by 1-4 to 0-2. We then went into a valley period and Freshford came back at us and by the nineteenth minute had gone ahead by two points, 1-5 to 1-7. A late rally by the 'Boro towards the end of the half, including another goal, meant that the sides were level at HT Dicksboro 2-7 St. Lachtains 1-10.

The second half was an completely different affair as the 'Boro maintained their momentum throughout, scoring a very impressive 3-10, while at the same time holding Freshford to 2-1.

Minor Roinn 'C' Hurling League

Dicksboro 1-8 Young Irelands 1-4

This game took place in very cold and windy conditions in Gowran and because of the conditions a high scoring game was not on the cards. It took nine minutes before either team scored and that was a point for the ‘Boro from a placed ball. Young Ireland’s response was to score a goal and a point and they lead all the way to the halftime whistle. HT Dicksboro 0-5 Young Irelands 1-3. The second half was a dogged affair with each team’s defensive lines holding strong. The game was level at 0-7 to 1-4 after nineteen minutes and we had to wait until the twenty nineth minute before the next score, which was a ‘Boro goal. A pointed free on thirty one minutes sealed this Dicksboro victory at 1-8 to St. Lachtain’s 1-4.

Panel: John Hanrick, Shane O'Brien, Aidan Walsh, Ronan Butler, Aaron Purcell, Jason Carroll, Conor Fitzpatrick, Thomas Carroll, Paddy Boyd, Ronan Moriarty, John Curtin, Briam Comerford, Jason Hennessey, Dylan Scott, Frank Nolan, Andrew Gaffney, Robbie Murphy, Aidan Nolan.

Under 14 Roinn 'A' Football

Dicksboro 4-6 O'Loughlin Gaels 2-3

We last met O'Loughlin Gaels in a League game on 10th March and lost by three points and so todays game in the Championship was a chance for revenge. With less than a minute on the clock we set out our stall with a fine goal. Scores were not coming freely for either team and we had to wait a further thirteen minutes before the next score, which was a point from the 'Boro. O'Loughlin's only score of the half came on the sixteenth minute when they raised the white flag. Another point, which was very nearly a goal followed for the 'Boro and a late goal gave us a commanding HT lead of 2-2 to 0-1.

Like the first half, the 'Boro were on the scoreboard in less than a minute with another point but this was very quickly followed by an O'Loughlins goal. The first fifteen minutes saw a lot more scoring action, O'Loughlins bringing their deficit back to four points at 3-4 to 2-3. The wind was knocked out of their sails a minute later when a goal followed for the 'Boro after a blistering solo run from midfield ended with the ball being smashed to the net. O'Loughin's did not score after that. FT Dicksboro 4-6 O'Loughlin Gaels 2-3

Under 14 Roinn 'C Football Championship

Dicksboro’s Under 14 Roinn ‘C’ team put in a herculean performance against Kilmoganny in their first round football championship game in Palmerstown last Sunday. When you consider that half of the ‘Boro team were drawn from the under 12 panel, it would be easy to think that they would be brushed aside by the opposition, but this was not the case, even though we did eventually succumb to the more physically strong team. A ‘Boro shot on goal in the first half that rattled the crossbar, could, on a different day have been a goal and put us level at half time but as it turned out we were behind by three points at the end of the half, 2-1 to 2-4. The second half was equally as tight with the ‘Boro again striking the crossbar, but we just never managed to get the upper hand on our opponents. FT Dicksboro 2-3 Kilmoganny 2-7. Panel: Mark Kenny, Conor O’Mahony, Liam Stynes, Sean Foley, Tommy Farrell, Kieran Galvin, TJ Stynes, Mark Nolan, Eoghan Moylan, Liam Brennan Smyth, Cillian Timmons, Gavin Walsh, Evan Clarke, Gavin Walsh, Jack Connolly, Darragh Maher, Padraic Moylan.

Under 11/12 Challenge

Rahoon/Newcastle Under 11 and Under 12 teams from Galway called in to Palmerstown before they went to Nowlan Pk to the Kilkenny/Galway National League game and took on our young stars. We proved to be too strong for our visitors in both age groups. Thank you to the parents who provided the food and help on the day.
