Under 16 Roinn 'A' League Final

Dicksboro 2-8 James Stephens 0-10

The 'Boro under 16 team had a great win today over a fancied James Stephens side in the Roinn 'A' League Final, held in Conahy. This was the same Village side that had won the County Championship Final in September and so defeating them was no mean feat. Both teams found it hard to get into any rhythm in the first half, each team scoring five points each and of the ten in total, seven were from frees. The second half also started slowly, each team trading points up to the ninth minute and it looked like we were in for a low scoring game, a game that could be decided by a point or two. All that changed as this young 'Boro side upped the tempo and bulged the net twice in two minutes to take command. Another 'Boro point followed before we got a response from the Village who accumulated four points without reply. A late point from the 'Boro sealed the day.

Senior County Final

Dicksboro 0-12 Ballyhale Shamrocks 0-16

Congratulations to Ballyhale Shamrocks on winning the Kilkenny Senior County Final. From the off, they looked very threatening, registering 0-4 to our 0-0 in the first nine minutes. Indeed their third point seemed destined for the net but for some excellent blocking and a point blank save from Aaron Duggan. A Martin Gaffney free after ten minutes put us on the scoreboard and on fourteen minutes we had two points in quick succession, one from Ollie Walsh and the other from Óisin Walsh to bring us back into the game, although still trailing by 0-3 to 0-5. Points were exchanged between the teams for the remainder of the half which finished at HT Dicksboro 0-7 Ballyhale Shamrocks 0-9. Before the first half finished however, we were to have two worrying moments on the twentieth and twenty eighth minute when Ballyhale were awarded penalties and with a master craftsman like Henry Shefflin taking them these were anxious moments. Thankfully these were both saved off the line by Shane Maher, as if they were converted this could have turned out to be a completely different game.

The start of the second half saw Ballyhale on the attack with two points within three minutes and we had to wait until the fifth minute for an Eddie O'Donoghue point. A scoring doldrum followed for the 'Boro as our next score came from a pointed free from Martin Gaffney on the sixteenth minute but this was soon followed by a Paul O'Flynn point from play. Six minutes remained in the game and five points separated the teams when Eddie struck low and hard but agonisingly saw his effort come back off the post. We can only wonder how the game would have panned out if this chance had to go in the net, but it was not to be.

Under 16 League Semi Final

Dicksboro 1-15 O'Loughlin Gaels 1-10

The long running saga of the Roinn 'A' League semi final finally came to a happy end for the 'Boro boys today in St. John's Pk. The first game, played in July, ended in a draw and the subsequent replay also ended in a draw and so today's game was the third attempt to divide the teams. Both previous games were of a very high standard and a large crowd turned out in the hope of seeing more of the same. They were not disappointed. The 'Boro threw down a marker from the off with a point after thirteen seconds, followed by another a few minutes later. After only eight minutes we seemed to be getting on top when we scored a very good goal to make it 1-3 to 0-2. The Gaels kept chipping away and got their big break on the thirtieth minute with a goal to go in leading at HT, Dicksboro 1-5 O'Loughlin Gaels 1-6.

As at the start of the first half, the 'Boro were on the scoreboard in less than a minute and another followed before two minutes had elapsed of the second half as the tempo of the game increased. Three in a row from O'Loughlin's saw the pendulum swing in their favour again, putting them ahead after nine minutes by 1-7 to 1-9. But from that point on the 'Boro boys dominated the game, outscoring our opponents by eight points to one in the last twenty minutes to exact revenge for our defeat by the Gaels in the Championship. A League Final against County Champions, James Stephens now awaits us.

Minor County Final

Dicksboro 1-5 James Stephens 1-8

James Stephens once again proved to be our bogie team at this age when they beat us in the Minor County Final today in a cold and wet Nowlan Pk. The conditions did not lend themselves to a high scoring game but still the return was disappointing as we only scored 1-2 in the first half and could only add three more points in the second half.

Under 14 League Final

Dicksboro 2-10 O'Loughlin Gaels 2-4

Congratulations to our under 14 panel who have added the Roinn 'A' League title to their collection of trophies this year. They have already been crowned County Champions at hurling and football, something last achieved by a 'Boro team in 2006. O'Loughlins had won the toss for venue and so the game was played in a sunny but cold St. John's Pk. We had the advantage of a strong win in the first half but the cold must have been effecting us as we were not performing on all four cylinders and only managed to be drawing at halftime. That said, of O'Loughlins four scores in the half, two of them(points) were scored in the first four minutes and the other two (goals) were scored in the last five minutes of the half. HT Dicksboro 1-5 O'Loughlin Gaels 2-2.

Nothing but a complete team performance was required in the second half as we now played against the strong wind and that is exactly what we got as we knuckled down to our task and started playing much better hurling. Adding 1-3 without reply in the first twelve minutes, we had the Gaels on the back foot but a finish from them like in the first half was always possible but did not materialise as this 'Boro team both defended and attacked heroically, playing good hurling right to the final whistle.
