St. Canice's Senior Hurling Championship

Dicksboro 2-16 Clara 1-17

We had to endure a nail biting finish to this first round championship (relegation semi final) replay against Clara today in well presented Jenkinstown, but more of that later. With only seconds gone in the game Cillian Breathnach was called into action when he saved what looked to be a certain Clara goal. Indeed it was not long before Philly Hogan half blocked another Clara effort that was destined for the 'Boro net, only for it to go over the bar. This game started in a similar way to last weeks in that it was Clara that were doing all the running in the early stages, leading by 1-5 to 0-2 after nine minutes, with our points coming from Eddie O'Donoghue frees. The game started to change for us three minutes later, when one of Cillians puck outs was superbly caught by Oisin Walsh who then handpassed to Paul O'Flynn who converted it to maximun points, goal. A couple of more pointed frees from Eddie and a very good point from Davy Ryan left the score at HT Dicksboro 1-7 Clara 1-10.

We set out our intent at the start of the second half when Derek O'Gorman pointed within fifteen seconds of the start. Three Paul O'Flynn points in a row, one following a driving solo run brought the game back to level at 1-12 each after fourteen minutes. We did edge in front when Enda Malone who was still playing in the wing back position put himself on the scoreboard. Both teams exchanged points over the next few minutes until Shane Maher, who had only come on a few minutes earlier, pounced on a ball which was delivered low and pulled first time on the ground to drive the sliothar into the corner of the net.

We were now in for a frantic finish with the stakes so high. Clara made it a draw game on twenty nine minutes('Boro 2-14 Clara 1-17) but thirty seconds later we had edged in front again with a Martin Gaffney point. A further 'Boro point on thirty one and a half minutes gave us a dangerous two point lead, meaning that Clara needed a goal to win. Clara were awarded a soft free forty five yards out and put it into the 'Boro box but heroic defending kept the ball out. Our defence was now under continuous pressure as we awaited the final whistle. Another Clara free, twenty five yards out was hit with blistering speed low and hard, but was again repelled. With thirty four minutes and eleven seconds gone, the referee sounded the final whistle, which was met with great joy and relief by the 'Boro supporters and players.

With the monkey of relegation off our back we will now face O'Loughlin Gaels in the quarter finals and who knows what will happen.

For those interested in stats, of the 'Boro's 1-7 in the first half, 1-2 came from play. In the second half we scored 1-9, 1-8 of which came from play.

Clara's tally of 1-10 in the first half, comprised of 1-4 from play whilst their second half tally of 0-7 comprised of 0-4 from play.

Denis Molloy Tournament

The annual Dicksboro U12 hurling tournament, sponsored by Denis Molloy sand & Gravel, was a huge success played in ideal conditions in Palmerstown last Saturday morning. Twelve teams in all (two from Dicksboro), played 16 games with 200 budding young hurlers served up a festival of hurling on the immaculate green sods (thanks to Joe Phelan & Co.) in glorious sunshine . The tournament played under Go Games principles ensured all got plenty of hurling action with the proceeds of the day to be presented to the Mother of Fair Love School., Kilkenny at a later date.
Dicksboro (Marún) enjoyed a first round win over Castlecomer by two points, found O Loughlin Gaels in unbeatable form in the second and rallied greatly in their final game to overcome a gallant James Stephens. Dicksboro (Bán) played bravely in their games but found the country opposition in their groups a bridge too far. All young hurlers received a souvenir medal at the end from sponsor Denis Molloy with O Loughlin Gaels claiming the Denis Molloy cup.
A big THANK YOU to all who made the tournament a huge success, the car parkers, the Boro U12 parents who supplied and served glorious food to all present, the tournament & pitch co-ordinators, the referees, (young & old) and to the U14s & U16s who shared the umpire duties. All in all a great Dicksboro club family event in aid of a worthy local charity - heres to 2012 ! Clubs who took part were Dicksboro, James Stephens, O Loughlin Gaels (all with two teams), Castlecomer, Graigballycallan, Thomastown, Gowran, Dunnamaggin & Tullaroan.
The U12s will conclude their very busy season with the Graigballycallan & James Stephens U12 blitzes over the next two Saturdays with an end of year social trip planned for Saturday 15th October.

St. Canice's Senior Hurling Championship

Dicksboro 0-17 Clara 1-14

Clara lived to fight another day when they scored an equalising point three minutes into injury time of this first round championship game held in Jenkinstown. Dicksboro played in their white jersey's whilst Clara donned the green. Playing with a strong wind in the first half, Clara made good use of it to go 1-3 to 0-0 ahead before we scored our first point from a free. Playing with an extra defender we were on the back foot until the twenty second minute when another Eddie O'Donoghue free was the start of a six point unanswered run from the 'Boro to put us back into the game and trailing by only one point. Two points from Clara in injury time of the first half meant the HT score was Dicksboro 0-8 Clara 1-8.

It was now our turn to play with the wind and on a day when pointed frees from 100 yards were not uncommon, we drew level after seven minutes. We were not able to press home our advantage however and there was never more than a point between the sides for the remainder of the match. We did gain the lead when we converted a 65 on the thirtieth minute and were looking good for a win, when Clara were awarded a free that was sent up field before being put over the bar. It proved to be the last puck of the game and both sides will have to meet again next weekend to decide who will contest the relegation final.

Kilkenny Citroen Centre Minor Roinn C Championship

The Minor Rionn C team kicked off their Championship campaign with a game , which was originally fixed for Bennettsbridge, being played in Callan against Young Irelands. Having won narrowly against this opposition in the League a competitive game was expected. So it wasn’t surprising that the Gowran lads went into an early lead with a point in the second minute. This was quickly equalled by the Boro but Young Irelands then took control by putting over three unanswered points resulting in 4 points to 1 lead by the 14th minute. The Boro then took the lead with a goal and point in a very competitive two minute period. The final 10 minutes of the half saw Young Irelands draw level with two points against the Boro’s single point.

The game continued in a similar vein for the first 5 minutes of the second half with the teams trading points. The game then took a very definite turn in the Boro’s favour with their second goal which was quickly followed by their third goal. Gowran kept in touch with the conversion of four frees and a 65 leaving the Boro leading 3.06 to 0.11 with less than 10 minutes left.

This period, while low in scores was exciting, competitive with both sides giving their all. Gowran got the deficit down to three points but a final point by Dicksboro in the 32 nd minute left the outcome at 3.08 to 0.13. The semi final is scheduled for Oct 1st, opposition to be decided. Having lost a number of players from the league team tonight’s team had a number of younger players from the 16s squad. In any event the commitment, focus and determination shown by the whole team was a pleasure to behold and augurs well for their next outing.

Kilkenny Honda Minor League Roinn C Final

This Minor Roinn C League Final displayed all that is good in sport: skill, courage, discipline but the outcome of the game was ultimately to be decided with a negative side, ie serious injury. The 'Boro got off to a good start, going 1-1 up before Danesfort got onto the scoreboard. Danesfort brought the game back to level midway through the half but we were to finish strongest to lead at halftime by 2-5 to 1-4.

The start of the second half saw Danesfort come at us with renewed vigour by scoring the first four points before a goal and a point put us five points in front again. Danesfort were not for lying down and again came back at us in what was a very exciting half to draw the game at the end of normal time at 3-9 each.

The first period of extra time saw our defence under sustained attack for long periods. The fact that we only conceded 1-2 in this ten minutes is down to a superb defensive display. The last score of the half, a goal from the 'Boro kept us well and truly in the game. Dicksboro 4-9 Danesfort 4-11.

The second half of extra time showed the courage of both teams as players dug to the depths of their energy levels as limbs tired. With about four minutes left in the game a Danesfort player suffered a serious accidental leg injury and the referee made a decision to abandon the game. The score at the time was Dicksboro 4-10 Danesfort 4-14. We wish the Danesfort player a speedy recovery.

Dicksboro U12s travelled on the 10th September last to participate in the Colman Dillon annual U12 hurling tournament hosted by the Erins Own club in Cork. After a sluggish start there were beaten in the 1st game by Carrigtwohill (eventual cup winners) on a 2.04 to 1.03 scoreline. Next the Boro boys played an exciting draw with Kilmallock and rounded off the group stages by comprehensively beating Blarney (Co. Cork). This earned them the right to contest the Shield final v. Causeway (Co. Kerry) which after some tense moments (by the selectors anyway) ended in a win for the Boro boys. Captain David Campion accepted the Colman Dillon shield and after a mighty feed of chicken & chips washed down by more high quality food (?) in the Horse & Jockey saw the Boro boys return home happy with their spoils-well done to all.

Duggan Steel Roinn A County Final

Dicksboro 6-14 James Stephens 2-8

The last time these two teams met was in the league final just over a month ago and a game in which the Village gained an upper hand on us to win by fifteen points. This was a freak result as we all knew that this 'Boro team were so much better than what was on display that day. And so, when we ended up in the County Final against the same opponents, it created an opportunity to show what we were made of.

The game started at a frantic pace with the Village putting two points on the board before we replied with a point, all in the first two minutes of the start. Both teams were evenly matched in the first half and were level on two occasions at 0-3 each in the seventh minute and 1-4 each on the seventeenth minute and so it was not at all clear who would eventually come out winners. A one goal advantage to the 'Boro at half time could have been more but for the sliothar hitting the crossbar in the dying seconds. HT Dicksboro 2-7 James Stephens 1-7.

The 'Boro management team must have sprinkled some magic dust on the boys in the dressing room at half time because they somehow managed to change the boys into young men who came out with such determination that it was clear that they were not prepared to let this one slip away. The team play, skill levels and scoring was a joy to watch and as one senior 'Boro spectator commented if someone on the Kilkenny senior team scored some of the scores people would be speaking of them for a long time. The final score was a true reflection of our complete dominance of this half and richly deserved. Well done to all the panel and the management team of Brian Fitzpatrick, Paddy Cahill, Eddie Holohan, Richie Mulrooney, Pat Cody and Paddy Grace.

Panel: Darragh Holohan, John Curtin, Evan Cody, Thomas Carroll, David Kenny, Robbie Fitzpatrick, Dylan Scott, Cory Cahill, Marc Cudmore, Aidan Walsh, Stephen Farrell, Shane O'Brien, Jamie Byrne, Kevin Kenny, Patrick Cahill, John Hanrick, Mark Slater, Ronan Butler, Frank Nolan, Aaron Purcell, Jason Carroll, Michael Phelan, Brian Comerford, Mark McGarry, Billy Rowe, Paddy Boyd, Liam Walsh, Dion Guilfoyle, Sean O'Neill.
