Under 12

Dicksboro U-12's led by captain Andrew Brennan Smith won the Joe Prendergast Memorial tournament in Thomastown at the weekend defeating Faythe Harriers, Thomastown and James Stephens along the way

21st March 2015

Under 12s had a great win in the Village under 12 tournament today (Saturday, March 21st 2015), with both ’Boro teams getting to the final where the winning Maroons, captained by Andrew Brennan-Smith, with coaches Eoin Maher (from Tipp originally) pitched against fellow under 12 mentors, Pat Carroll and Martin Rose in charge of the ’Boro Whites team.
The grounds on the Kells Road were immaculate and the event was well run with lovely tea, coffee and sandwiches served by Ruth McIntyre and crew afterwards.

Well done to the Dicksboro under 12 team who had a clean sweep of victories over Naas, Freshford and Dungarvan in their annual Under 12 Tournament held in Palmerstown today.

Denis Molloy Sand and Gravel Under 12 Tournament

Our annual Denis Molloy Sand and Gravel sponsored under 12 Tournament was held today in a sun kissed Palmerstown.  This year we had two groups of three teams, with Na Fianna (Mountmellick) and Thomastown in our group, while the other group consisted of James Stephens, Erin's Own (Castlecomer) and Na Fianna (Dublin).
Our opening game against Thomastown was very close but the concession of two quick goals near the end of the first half was crucial as we lost by 1-4 to 2-4.
Our Laois visitors really put it up to us in our second game, leading at HT by 3-1 to 2-2 but a very good second half performance from the 'Boro boys sealed this game for us on a final score of Dicksboro 3-5 Na Fianna 3-3.
The last game of the day for the 'Boro was against Erin's Own and this was probably the most enjoyable match of the day with both teams showing a lot of skill but we were narrowly pipped at the end by a couple of points.
Congratulations and thank you to all involved with organisation and catering on the day

Under 11 Tournament

Everyone was a winner at Dicksboro’s Under 11 tournament which was held last Saturday in Palmerstown.  This is also a charitable event and this year all proceeds will go to the School of the Holy Spirit, a worthwhile cause indeed.  The six teams taking part were divided into two groups of three, who then played a round robin and this was followed by a final game for each against a team from the opposing group.  The ‘Boro boys had good wins over Naas and James Stephens in their group stage and were up against Dunnamaggan in their final game, which they also won, making it a clean sweep for the ‘Boro on the day.  Many thanks to all who helped out in any way on the day, organising pitches and also in catering for our many visitors.  Panel:  Ger Byrne, Tom Carroll, Mikey Clifford, Eoin Dalton, Jason Delaney, Cormac Kennedy, Daire Long, Ultán Long, Kian Maher, Brian Minogue, Liam Moore, Aaron Murphy, Finn O’Brien, Colm O’Hara, Killian Phelan, Niall Rowe, Oisín Timmons, David Walsh.

Under 11/12 Tournaments

Dicksboro’s, Dennis Molloy sponsored under 12 tournament proved another huge success last weekend in Palmerstown. All profits from this year’s event will go to the Mother of Fair Love School. An under 11 tournament was also organised to run simultaneously. Teams from O’Loughlin Gaels, Thomastown, Gowran, Erin’s Own(Castlecomer), Dunnamaggan,, James Stephens and Ballyboden/St.Endas took part in the under 12 blitz, which comprised of two groups of four teams, each playing three games in the group stage and each then playing a final game against a team from the other group. The under 11 blitz had teams from Clara, Tullaroan, Ferbane/Belmont, Mountmellick and Naas taking part in a similar format to the under 12’s. Pat Murphy, on behalf of Denis Molloy presented the cup to Thomastown, who won the under 12’s and the shield to Clara, who won the under 11 section. A very sincere thank you to all who helped out on the day, referees, umpires, pitch co-ordinators, parking attendants and all the parents who supplied the refreshments and those that helped with the catering. Without their help events such as this, simply would not happen.

Andy Egan Tournament

Dicksboro's U12 team recorded a fantastic victory in the Annual Andy Egan Memorial Cup, Shield section, in James Stephens today. Dicksboro recorded notable victories against James Stephens in the first round before suffering their first and only defeat of the day, narrowly to a Graigue Ballycallan side. We then went on to beat Naas. Dickboro and James Stephens qualified for the final by virtue of their superior points difference as 3 teams, Dicksboro, James Stephens and Graigue Ballycallan had finished on equal points.

Play then transfered from St Kierans College to Larchfield for the Shield Final. We trailed by 2 points to no score at halftime, but with the aid of the breeze and an overall fantastic team effort hauled back James Stephens and by the end, had 2 points to spare to the absolute delight of all the team, parents and mentors present.

Our other Under 12 team, playing in the Cup section were unlucky not to progress to the final after drawing with Castlecomer (eventual winners of the cup) and beating Naas. We failed to progress on score difference.

Under 12 Joe Prendergast Memorial Tournament

Dicksboro under 12’s had a very successful and enjoyable day last Sunday at the excellently organised Joe Prendergast Memorial Tournament in Thomastown. Our group comprised of Ballyhale Shamrocks, Mount Sion(Waterford) and Sarsfields(Cork). Victories over our first two opponents put us in a commanding position as we went into our last group game against Sarsfields. This was a very tight game throughout and fittingly ended in a draw, leaving us on top of our group. Clarinbridge(Galway) topped their group and therefore we met them in the final. After having a very early start to their day(they had to be in Thomastown at 10am) the Galway boys wilted and we won well after dominating throughout the pitch. Congratulations to these young ‘Boro boys who are shaping up well. Thank you to the Thomastown Club and the Prendergast family for a lovely day.

Panel: Daire Maher, Liam Stynes, Bobby O'Mahony, Tommy Farrell, William O'Sullivan, Liam Brennan Smyth, Mark Nolan, Joe Lacey, Nicky Burke, Eoghan Moylan, Justin Cahill, Eoin De Buitlear, Padraic Moylan, Liam Dowling, Sean Richardson.

Erin's Own Under 12 Tournament

What a truly fantastic day was had in sunny Castlecomer today for the annual Erin's Own Gerry Holden Pertetual Trophy. The honesty, determination and zeal shown by all players is what makes our Gaelic games the greatest sports in the world. Hats off to 'Comer for their hospitality and organisation.

The 'Boro were invited back as defending champions and our group consisted of Dunnamaggan and Erin's Own and in the other group there was O'Loughlin Gaels, Kilmacud Crokes and Carnmore (Galway). Dunnamaggan were our first opponents and we got on top from the start, leading at HT by 1-3 to 0-1 and eventually winning by 4-4 to 1-2. Erin's Own were next and they proved to be much more difficult opposition. 'Comer went in at HT leading by 1-3 to 1-1 but they had been playing with the assistance of the wind and with our puckouts landing in the opposition square, it was only a matter time before we bagged some goals and these were enough for us to come out on top by 3-5 to 1-6.

On the other side, Kilmacud had finished on top and so we had to face them in the cup final. Two evenly matched teams put up a superb performance and some of the skills on display were beyond the years of the players. Full time finished all level and so we headed into two five minute halves of extra time which also ended level. It was decided that the final would go into sudden death, the first to score taking the laurels. Kilmacud scored after four minutes and our heros were vanquished.

Panel: Tadhg Butler, Mark Kenny, Liam Hennessy, Liam Brennan Smyth, Mark Nolan, Bobby O'Mahony, Eoghan Moylan, Evan Clarke, Eoin De Buitlear, Liam Stynes, Tommy Farrell, Sean Richardson, Justin Cahill, Nicky Burke, Mitchell Synott.

Ballyboden/ St. Enda's Under 12 Blitz

Dicksboro under 12's had their first major outing of the year today when they travelled to Dublin to play in the Ballyboden/St. Enda's blitz. First up was Naas who gave us a very tough match that finished with a victory for the 'Boro at 0-4 to 0-2. After a ten minute break we had to face our hosts in what turned out to be another keenly fought game which we won by 2-1 to 1-1. Brosna Gaels from Offaly were our last game in the group stage and a victory here would put us in the final against the second place team. As it turned out we won this game well.

As Naas beat Ballyboden in their game we now had to play Naas again in the final. Knowing how close our first game was against Naas it was important to start well. Each player put his heart and soul into the game, and with all the team putting in such a work rate, there was only going to be one result and that was a win for the 'Boro. FT Dicksboro 4-4 Naas 0-2.

Our hosts then provided chips, sandwiches, tea and coffee to all and we extend our thanks to them for their hospitality and the way they ran the tournament. Each player was presented with a hurley grip and the team was also presented with a trophy.

Under 12's End of Year Trip

The Dicksboro U11 & U12s had a very enjoyable end of season trip last Saturday to Dublin. Leaving Palmerstown at 10.30am the Boro boys rolled on for Blanchardstown Shopping Centre in Dublin entertained on board by a few comical Killinascully DVDS. The first agenda was food as they munched their way through a McDonalds before a couple of hours entertainment in the Leisure Plex complex nearby. After a team building games of quasar the Boro bus rolled onto Lucan Sarsfields GAA club for two games of hurling with some gaelic football against the respective U11 & U12 hosts. Finishing just before the rain, the Boro contingent were afforded great hospitality by the host club before setting home for Palmerstown after a great day. Indeed it proved to be a good weekend for Dicksboro in Lucan Sarsfields as 24 hours later the Dicksboro ladies enjoyed a good win at the same venue to qualify for the Leinster Intermediate Camogie final. The Dicksboro U11 & U12 mentors would like to thank the players and their parents for their committment, help & support during a busy 2011 year -here`s to 2012 !

Andy Egan Tournament

The U12s completed their competitive hurling season at the weekend in winning the Shield at the Andy Egan memorial tournament hosted by the James Stephens GAA club. In the first game after a slow start (World cup rugby blues) the Boro lads enjoyed a good win over Ballygunner (Co. Waterford) in pleasant sunshine. The next game against the host was a close affair with the Village boys edging home on a 1.05 to 1.03 scoreline. By virtue of their group placing the Boro boys faced up to Naas (Co. Kildare) in the Shield final. An epic game ensued with the Boro racing into an early second half lead but a gallant Naas side fought back to level matters at full time. In extra time (5 mins per half) the Boro boys dug deep and held out for a two point Shield win to end their busy competitive hurling season smiling - well done to all.

Next Saturday the U11 & U12 panels will enjoy a well deserved end of year trip to Dublin-taking in leisurely pursuits in the Leisure Plex in Blanchardstown followed by games against Lucan Sarsfields in the afternoon to bring hurling season 2011 to an end.

Denis Molloy Tournament

The annual Dicksboro U12 hurling tournament, sponsored by Denis Molloy sand & Gravel, was a huge success played in ideal conditions in Palmerstown last Saturday morning. Twelve teams in all (two from Dicksboro), played 16 games with 200 budding young hurlers served up a festival of hurling on the immaculate green sods (thanks to Joe Phelan & Co.) in glorious sunshine . The tournament played under Go Games principles ensured all got plenty of hurling action with the proceeds of the day to be presented to the Mother of Fair Love School., Kilkenny at a later date.
Dicksboro (Marún) enjoyed a first round win over Castlecomer by two points, found O Loughlin Gaels in unbeatable form in the second and rallied greatly in their final game to overcome a gallant James Stephens. Dicksboro (Bán) played bravely in their games but found the country opposition in their groups a bridge too far. All young hurlers received a souvenir medal at the end from sponsor Denis Molloy with O Loughlin Gaels claiming the Denis Molloy cup.
A big THANK YOU to all who made the tournament a huge success, the car parkers, the Boro U12 parents who supplied and served glorious food to all present, the tournament & pitch co-ordinators, the referees, (young & old) and to the U14s & U16s who shared the umpire duties. All in all a great Dicksboro club family event in aid of a worthy local charity - heres to 2012 ! Clubs who took part were Dicksboro, James Stephens, O Loughlin Gaels (all with two teams), Castlecomer, Graigballycallan, Thomastown, Gowran, Dunnamaggin & Tullaroan.

10th September 2011

Dicksboro U12s travelled on the 10th September last to participate in the Colman Dillon annual U12 hurling tournament hosted by the Erins Own club in Cork. After a sluggish start there were beaten in the 1st game by Carrigtwohill (eventual cup winners) on a 2.04 to 1.03 scoreline. Next the Boro boys played an exciting draw with Kilmallock and rounded off the group stages by comprehensively beating Blarney (Co. Cork). This earned them the right to contest the Shield final v. Causeway (Co. Kerry) which after some tense moments (by the selectors anyway) ended in a win for the Boro boys. Captain David Campion accepted the Colman Dillon shield and after a mighty feed of chicken & chips washed down by more high quality food (?) in the Horse & Jockey saw the Boro boys return home happy with their spoils-well done to all.

Castlecomer Under 12 Tournament

Dicksboro U12`s celebrate in Castlecomer - For the second successive weekend Dicksboro juveniles proved tops in Castelcomer as the U12`s brought home the Gerry Holden U12 Perpetual trophy, the Boro U9s having enjoyed similar success the previous weekend. The Dicksboro U12`s travelled last Saturday morning to Canon Kearns park in Castlecomer to participate in the annual U12 blitz well organised by the host club. Following a fine display of hurling the Boro lads overcame hosts Castlecomer in the opening game. Following a short rest the Boro faced Lisdowney in the second & final group game. Despite an early setback of two quick goals the Boro boys eventually overpowered a gallant Lisdowney team to face near neighbours, O`Loughlin Gaels in the Holden cup final. The final was a cracking affair as both teams threw everything at each other in pursuit of victory. O Loughlins raced into an early lead with the wind in their backs to lead at half time. The Boro boys dug deep in the second half and goaled and pointed in the final minutes to win by five points. Wild scenes of celebration followed as captain Seán Boyd accepted the trophy and made a fine speech of acceptance on his player`s behalf. Well done to a steadily improving bunch of young hurlers.

Phelan/Stone Tournament

Dicksboro's under 11 panel made the short journey to Ballyragget to take part in the annual Phelan/Stone tournament run by the St. Patricks Club. There was a number of groups comprising of four teams in each and a lovely plaque was presented to each participating club captain at the end of their round of matches. Our first match was against Kilmacud Crokes of Dublin, a team that had beaten us in the recent Ballyboodan/St. Endas tournament and so it proved again as we were slow to settle into any rhythm. Next, was Ballingarry of Tipp and the boys were now into their stride and came away victors. We then had a break for about an hour before our last match against Athenry of Galway. The hour was easily spent as the boys were supplied with a burger and chips courtesy of St. Patricks. Any worry that the mentors may have had that the boys would be stuck to the ground after this mighty feed was answered when we were entertained with a thrilling game that we won by the narrowest of margins in the last moments of the match.

Panel: Mark Kenny, Liam Stynes, Eoghan Moylan, Tadhg Butler, Mitchell Sinnott, Daire Maher(Capt), Tommy Farrell, Mark Nolan, Liam Brennan Smyth, Justin Cahill, Evan Clarke, Liam Dowling, Liam Hennessy, William O'Sullivan, Jack Tynan, John Wiswall.

Ballyboden/St. Endas Under 11 Tournament

It was an early start for our Under 11 panel this morning, meeting in Palmerstown at 7.45am to make their way to Dublin to take part in a tournament run by the Ballyboden/St. Endas club. The tournament comprised of four teams, the hosts, ourselves, Naas and Camross and the top two teams were to play in a Cup final while the bottom two would play in a Shield. First up was a very strong and well organised Naas. We were a little sluggish in this game and Naas were the deserved winners. After only a very short interval, we took on the challenges of Camross but the boys were now coming into their stride and recorded their first win of the day. A short walk across the road brought us to our new venue where we were to play the hosts. This was a ding dong battle, where our lads played some lovely hurling, blocking, hooking and fighting for every ball and they deserved their victory.
We therefore found ourselves in the Cup Final against the only team that had beaten us, Naas. This was a totally different game to our first meeting and the 'Boro boys had the bit between their teeth and tore into this game with a determination not to lose again. They ran out very clear and well deserved winners. A presentation followed and our Captain was presented with a very nice trophy and each boy received a hurley grip and bag of chips. Food was provided to all on the day by Ballyboden, who had done an excellent job organising this tournament. We had a bus load of very happy children on the way home and this victory should give them the confidence to build on this.

Na Fianna Under 11 Tournament

The Dicksboro U10 & U11 squads (32 in total) enjoyed a terrific days hurling & outing last Sunday as they travelled to the Annual Dermot McNulty tournaments hosted by Na Fianna GAA club in Dublin. Despite the early (8am) departure from Palmerstown they soon livened up (thanks to a few episodes of Killnascully) and arrived to a terrific reception of glorious food at the Na Fianna Club. Both games played five games against Eire Og (Nenagh), James Stephens, Na Fianna, Na Piarsaigh(Cork) & Kilmacud Crokes. The U11s enjoyed three victories in close thrilling encounters against James Stephens, Eire Og & Na Piarsaigh and succumbed to the fine hurling of the Dublin clubs Na Fianna & Kilmacud Crokes. The U10s played gallantly throughout in the U11 Shield competition and enjoyed one win in their five games. Armed with a mighty feed of chicken & chips (thanks to Na Fianna ladies committee) both squads marched on to Croke Park for the NHL final v. Dublin but alas as happened earlier the Dublin team came out on top. Back on the bus, a few kit kats, jaffa cakes & few more Killinascully DVDs later, all returned home tired but happy - a great day out in the hurling calendar 2011 - well done to all the Boro youngsters & their mentors !

Denis Molloy & Son sponsored Dicksboro Under-12 Annual Hurling Blitz 2010

The Annual Denis Molloy and Son sponsored Dicksboro Under-12 Hurling Blitz took place on Saturday last at Palmerstown. This year
200 young Under-12 hurlers from Wexford, Dublin as well as Thomastown, O’Loughlin Gaels, James Stephens, Conahy and the host club, participated in 15-a-side and 10-a-side games. All of these teams gave a full committed display of hurling on the day. The charity that benefited from the event was the Chernobyl Childrens’ Project – Kilkenny Outreach Group, so a special thank you to all who supported
this very worthy cause. The Dicksboro juvenile committee would like to thank the parents of the Dicksboro Under-12 panel who provided sandwiches and home baking and to the mothers on the day who catered for all the visiting teams and supporters. A special thank you
to our sponsor again this year, Denis Molloy. The club was delighted to have the All-Ireland minor winning members Cillian Buckley, Ollie Walsh and Gary Gaule to present medals to all the players from all the participating teams on the day.

Tim Dennehy Memorial Cup

On Saturday last, August 29, the Dicksboro under 12 hurlers travelled to Cork to take part in the Tim Dennehy Memorial Cup run by
Blackrock Hurling Club.  The 'Boro were in a group with Na Fianna of Dublin, Eire óg (Nenagh) and the hosts Blackrock.  Our first game
was against Na Fianna which we won on a scoreline  of 2-6 to 2-2.  The second match was aginst hosts Blackrock who were a very big
team and after a tough match, Dicksboro lost on a scoreline of 2-4 to 1-4.  Our final match in the group was against Eire óg and in order
for the 'Boro to qualify for the final we needed to win by ten points or more.  Eire óg had already beaten Blackrock and a win for them
would secure top spot, however Dicksboro were only getting into their stride and beat the Tipperary side on a scoreline of 5-6 to 1-2
and so qualified for the final.  In the final, Na Piarsaigh of Limerick provided the opposition and again the 'Boro boys came through with
a fine display and won on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-3.  Dicksboro captain, Aidan Nolan, accepted the cup on behalf of his team.  He thanked Blackrock for inviting Dicksboro down and offered three cheers for the losers.

Panel:  Ben Tynan, Conor FitzPatrick, Jim Dollard, Jack Woods, Conor Doheny, Aaron Malone, Chris Kavanagh, Thomas Kenny, Robert
