Dicksboro Under 8 Hurling Blitz

Juvenile hurling and the O`Neill Centre, (Enable Ireland) Kilkenny were the big winners at the weekend at the fifth annual under 8 Charity Hurling tournament hosted by the Dicksboro club at Palmerstown last Saturday afternoon.

Fourteen clubs comprising sixteen teams and over 250 boys & girls under the age of eight years provided unbridled joy as they showed their talents under the warm Saturday sun. The sheer spectacle of the mass of juveniles in their respective club jerseys strewn across the Palmerstown venue during an afternoon in June was a sight to behold. Mentors, parents, siblings and others watched in delight & awe as their young stars hurled their hearts out for their parishes. Thirty two games in total were played in the Palmerstown venue in just three hours.

The action in two blitzes running simultaneously, consisting of eight teams each, got underway at 2.00pm with all teams initially playing three group games of twenty minutes duration. All games were played in the spirit of GO-GAMES with ten a side teams with minimal subs, both blitzes had no knock- out stages with all teams playing four matches in total, ensuring plenty of action for all concerned. After three matches, everybody adjourned for fabulous food served up by the Dicksboro ladies & parents. A bit like the laves & the fishes all were fed. One further game per team after the break brought the day to a close with all players receiving a commemorative medal. As the sun began to set, all trooped home, tired but happy, following a great day’s excitement for a worthy cause.

The Dicksboro Juvenile GAA Club organisers would like to thank all those who helped, in any and everyway, to make it such an enjoyable day for our young up and coming hurlers and for their support in raising much needed funds (€1200) for the O’Neill Centre (Enable Ireland) in Kilkenny. Therese Buckley & Therese Healy, representing the O `Neill Centre praised the host club for the great days entertainment & the clubs ongoing support of the centre. Special thanks to our four pitch co-ordinators & the U14 & U16s who refereed throughout the blitz.
Special congratulations to all the `young hurlers` who made the day memorable. ` Here`s to 2013 !
